THE MISTAKES YOU MAKE AS AN UNDERGROUND MUSIC ARTISTE | PART I |

For over four to five years, I have worked closely with undergroud music artiste struggling to get to the foreground.
Over these four to five years, I have been opportuned to promote songs for these artistes, planned events for some, and I have even managed some.
Spending so much time with these underground artiste, I have noticed a lot of mistakes they have made over time and are still making till date.
I want to use this medium to share it with you and probably change the way you see things.
I hope notifying you of these mistakes will go a long way in fostering your career.

NO ONE GIVES A FVCK ABOUT YOU NOW
No one cares about you at these stage because you have nothing to offer yet but never forget you have it in you. You should always remember the reason why you started music – is it passion or is it the attraction of fame and money. If your goal is pushing you too much, pressurizing you alot, and putting you on the edge. Please change your goals.
Remove the entitlement mentality that your friends and family must support you by reposting your pictures on social media, download your music, and talk about your songs. No one owes you any of these.
You must do songs that are satiable. Songs on their own has the compelling power to do these things you crave and need as an underground artiste who wants to get to the foreground.
People will definitely share a good song with the next friend. People will only attach themselves to you when you are becoming succesful in your art – remenber that success has many children.

YOU DON’T STUDY
Many of you don’t read and research. Times are changing and you need to be up to date on you and your environment. You need to know what works and what doesn’t work anymore. Read more and see how your lyrics hit a real huge change. You just have to know a little about everything. Read about those who have gotten to the peak of what you are doing and learn from it. You must study. You might want to follow @wesellbooksng on Instagram. They did fix you up with good books you can read.

TALENT IS NOT ALL, GET A JOB
Hardwork, talent, and connection are not enough for you to get to the spotlight. You need good financing. Quality sound, quality production, and quality promotion all need good finance. You need money to look good on stage, you need money to get you to venues where you did perform for free most times, and even book cheap rooms to spend the night. You need money for a lot of things as an underground acts.
This is why you need to get a paying a JOB. You need a frequent source of income that can serve your needs and music needs and note well that you must not live above your means to impress people. That won’t make them buy you or your music.

WHO MAKES THE BEAT?
I can’t say more than this. I will only ask you who makes your beat?

PROMOTION BEYOND THE TRADITIONAL METHODS
Promotion and Marketing has changed over the years especially for music. Are you still using traditional/old tricks to promote your body of work in the internet age alone? if yes , you need to change habit. Music promotion has gone beyond uploading a song on a website and then sharing around and yet no conversion made.
This is why I recommend music artist to this guy on whatsapp (08096655873). At affordable rates, you get to strategize how best to get your promotion done with a streamlined budget. So you don’t just throw your money away into thin air.

DO IT WHEN YOU HAVE THE URGE
Don’t wait for no one. You have an urge to go to the studio? You have the urge to drop a song? Drop it. You have the urge to drop an EP? Drop it. (I have a friend/artiste “CHIDEY” whose first body of work as a music artiste was an EP – “Allow me to be Frank”) You have the urge to drop an album? drop it.
We only live once. It is easier these days to drop a body of work and even monetize. Seize these opportunities now. Life is short, you don’t have to be popular before you do it. “Just do it when the urge hits you”
As a standup comedian, my fifth show will be happening on the 20th of July, 2019 at the prestigious University Of Nigeria, Nsukka and i don’t feel pressured about doing shows because i have experienced doing four shows and i am not in a haste anymore.
This is what doing it now will do for you, it will help you remove pressures and hopes and allow you enjoy doing music at your own pace.

MONETIZE WHEN?
Monetize your music when you can boast of 100 real fans that understand and talk about your music.
Monetize your music when you can afford digital distribution companies.
Monetize your music when your have fully studied and understood how the digital market works or when you have someone on your team that does.
You must create methods of earning from your music.

NEVER IN YOUR LIFE SHOULD YOU SEND A DM TO CELEBRITIES ABOUT HOW GOOD YOU ARE
After my film school training in Directing at the prestigious Royal Arts Academy, if there was anything i learnt about arts it was coming to know that in Arts we must learn to Show and not Tell.
Why tell people when you can show it? Why tell someone who doesn’t know you than show him to convince him you are good.
Stop going from one DM to another begging and bragging. You really not that good at this stage but will definitely hit your true potentials with time.
Use your social media and show the world how good you are.
